Welcome to Sheltown Farm!
Hi! Welcome to Sheltown Farm – our little family farm. We are currently raising Angus/Hereford beef cattle and laying hens. Our cattle are on certified organic pasture for about eight months per year. When off pasture, they are fed on the best grasses that we can get our hands on. While we strive to keep the animals on certified organic hay, it isn’t always possible. We make sure our winter hay has the minimal amount of pesticides and are non-GMO. We keep things as organic as possible, and test the nutritional quality of the hay that we buy. Our cows are fat and happy, even through the PNW winters!
Our first calf, Molasses, was born in January 2021, and will be ready for slaughter in September 2022. His momma, Nilla, has been a great mom, and will be bred again this year. His “Auntie” Zorra is ready for her first breeding this year. Hopefully, we will have two new calves next spring to introduce to you!
We currently have 14 laying hens, and have eggs for sale all year. Our current flock consists of three White Leghorns, two Golden Laced Wyandottes, two Blue Andalusians, four Easter Eggers, a Buff Orpington, a Rhode Island Red, and a Delaware (we think). About half of our flock were raised up from chicks, while the others were given to us by friends and neighbors. Our chickens are fed on organic layer crumble, and whatever other goodies they can bribe from us. The chickens have been trained to come running when called, and are always rewarded with yummy chicken treats. The current favorite treat is watermelon rinds, but dried mealworms are always enjoyed.
Feel free to reach out with questions about our animals, and what we will be doing next.
Blessings!
